The Village of Silwan
Outside the walls of the Old City are the foundations of still older habitations. When pieced together, with their holy sites and ancient foundations, Silwan and the other neighborhoods outside the walls make up Jerusalem. In Arabic, Silwan means tranquility, peace of mind, stability and comfort.

The Seperation Barrier
Silwan was occupied by Israel in the 1967 war, and was subsequently annexed into the Greater Jerusalem. Although this annexation has been proclaimed as illegal by the international community including the United States, and East Jerusalem is likely to become an integral part of the future Palestinian state, Israel has built the separation barrier east of Silwan, attempting to create a fait accompli of its sovereignty.

House Demolition
Of all the Arab neighborhoods and villages in East Jerusalem, Silwan suffers the most from house demolitions. Its close vicinity to the old city makes it the most sought-after piece of land for the Jewish settlers associations, and poses a continual threat of land dispossession by the Jerusalem municipality.
